Otoplasty, otherwise knows as “Ear Pinning Surgery” is the cosmetic correction of ears that protrude or stick out. This surgery is most commonly performed on children before they enter school to help prevent damage to a young child’s developing ego from teasing and ridicule. Dr. Rodrigues has a soft spot for kids and will gently counsel children and their parents on corrective treatment when the time is right.
Adults also are candidates for otoplasty. such as when an ear becomes disfigured by injury or it develops disproportionately. Otoplasty can improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear and correct a defect in the ear structure that is present at birth.
Am I A Candidate For Ear Surgery?
Ideally children should be at least 5 years old, cooperative, and amenable to the idea of undergoing surgery. Healthy teens and adults who are generally healthy, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations of the result are also good candidates for otoplasty.
Under either general or local anesthesia, Dr. Rodrigues will make incisions on the back of the ear(s), then place permanent internal stitches to hold the ears in their new positions.
Following surgery, patients wear special dressings to hold the ears in place while the incisions heal.
